Digital transformation is no longer a luxury: it is a competitiveness lever. You still need to know the right programs to finance each stage of the project.
For many SMEs, government funding can seem complex and difficult to access. However, many programs exist to support modernization projects. The real challenge is often knowing which ones apply to your situation and in what order to approach them.
Here is an overview of the main options available.
The programs and amounts presented in this article are subject to change. Eligibility also varies depending on each company’s situation. The information below is provided as a reference to help you identify the main available funding sources. To confirm your eligibility or obtain the most up to date details, we recommend contacting the responsible organizations directly. The most accessible option: Digital Success Program
Managed by the CCTT Network, this program relaunched its Stream 2 on January 14, 2026. It funds digital support services: 50 percent of costs for projects of 100 hours or less, 35 percent for projects between 100 and 200 hours, up to a maximum of approximately 11,200 dollars in non repayable funding. It can be combined with other funding sources up to 80 percent of the project cost. For a CMMS project or a data structuring initiative, it is often the first option to consider: fast processing and accessible funding.
A loan with a non repayable portion: Digital Transformation Loan
Offered in certain regions, including through the Economic Development Office of the Longueuil Agglomeration, it combines a loan of up to 50,000 dollars with a non repayable portion of up to 20,000 dollars, applicable to software, external consulting fees and certain internal wages related to the project. A useful option when your project goes beyond the scope of the Digital Success Program.
Regional programs to check in your area
Depending on your territory, other funding options may be available. In Montreal, Circuit Numérique offers a net grant of approximately 5,205 dollars. In Laval, the Virage Techno program for manufacturers can reach up to 50,000 dollars. These programs are region specific and change frequently so it is important to verify what applies to your situation.
For larger projects: ESSOR Stream 2 (Productivity Project)
Managed by Investissement Québec, this program supports projects aimed at increasing business productivity through the acquisition of technology, software, equipment or automation of operations. Projects must generally represent at least 100,000 dollars in investment and be led by a company with more than 1 million dollars in revenue. Financial assistance can reach up to 10 million dollars while total government assistance can represent up to 50 percent of the project cost.
For manufacturing SMEs, this program is particularly relevant when software implementation is part of a broader modernization or automation initiative.
At the federal level: Canada Economic Development
The expansion and productivity program from CED can finance up to 50 percent of an SME project. It is often combined with provincial support.
How can you avoid mistakes? Three questions are usually enough to guide the decision:
- What is the size of your project?
Below 25,000 dollars start with the Digital Success Program. Above that look at loans and the ESSOR program. - Is the software standalone or linked to equipment?
If it is standalone, digital programs may be sufficient. If it is part of an automation project, ESSOR becomes relevant.
- Where is your company located? The region can influence access to certain programs or increase available support.
Frequently asked questions
Can programs be combined?
Yes, often up to a certain cap such as 80 percent for the Digital Success Program. When used properly, they can complement each other effectively.
How long does it take?
Timelines vary: some programs respond within days while others take several months. The Digital Success Program is among the fastest.
What if I choose the wrong program?
This is the most common mistake. Applying in the wrong order can sometimes cause you to lose access to funding you would otherwise have been eligible for.
